These days, celebrating an important occasion can be done in a green way. This helps ensure that food served and the things used do not harm the environment.
Thanksgiving is one celebration that can be made more meaningful if family members contribute to making it an eco-friendly affair. Indeed, there’s something to be thankful when you know you are able to do a good deed together with your loved ones.
Practice the 3R’s
Buy only what you need so you are able to reduce your waste. Also, purchase products that use recyclable materials.
When shopping, make sure to bring along reusable bags and do make it a point to recycle plastic, glass and aluminum containers.
Go Organic
In preparing your food, choose the locally grown ones and those grown without the use of chemicals including pesticides, fertilizers, antibiotics and artifical hormones. This way, you can be sure you’re providing a healthy meal to your loved ones on a very special occasion.
You may also want to start an organic vegetable garden in your home that can give you fresh produce every now and then.
Celebrate at Home
Instead of going to a restaurant or traveling to another place, why not celebrate Thanksgiving at home. This alone can reduce your carbon footprint, improve air quality and lower your own stress level. At home, you stay safe and avoid the highway traffic that’s normally at its heaviest during Thanksgiving weekend.
Create Your Own Decorations
This is a worthy project you can do together with your kids. You not only save money but your family also gets more creative, gets to enjoy the activity and helps preserve the environment.
Simply use the art materials available at home or buy what you need in advance. If you’ll be using paints or food coloring, be sure to get only the non-toxic ones.
Get Spiritual
Regardless of your religious affiliation, it would be a good idea to make your Thanksgiving a spiritual celebration as well. Things you can do are to prepare some thanksgiving hymns that you can sing together before dinner and set aside a time for prayer or reflection prior to or after mealtime.
Another option is to take a walk in the woods just to commune with nature or do some meditation.
Plant a Tree
To make the occasion more meaningful and unique, you can plant a tree in your backyard as a symbol of your commitment to preserve the ecosystem.
A fruit tree would be a great choice as it can give you fruits that you and your family can enjoy moving forward.
