Taking advantage of natural and renewable energy is one of the most ideal ways to create an eco friendly home. Wind and solar power are what people can fully utilize today to provide their homes with electricity.
With solar energy, however, installing solar panels may be a bit expensive particularly for homeowners who are just earning enough to meet their personal and their family’s needs. But there’s hope.
Did you know that by simply using your plastic bottles, you can actually make solar bottle bulbs? That’s right, light bulbs made from plastic bottles.
This is a great DIY project that provides a lot of benefits. The best part is you can find your materials at home and don’t have to spend anything.
Easy Steps
To start with this home project, the first step is to gather all your materials. These include empty plastic bottles preferably the medium to one-liter size only, bleach and strings.
Clean the bottles and remove the labels. Be sure to keep the cap on.
Next, fill the plastic bottle with water and add three tablespoons of bleach. Then put the cap back and tighten it. There’s no need to shake afterwards to allow the bleach to permeate.
The purpose of adding bleach is to prevent the growth of algae.
While the finished product can be put on the roof by creating a hole on it and installing the bottle up there with half of it exposed outside and the lower part remaining inside, this is ideal only for use in a playhouse, tree house or a garage. Installing this in the main house might cause damage to your roof system.
An alternative, though, is to put this in the window which receives direct sunlight. At night, you can simply transfer it to any room where you need light and that’s it.
The Inventor
A Brazilian mechanic is behind this cheap alternative to the usual light bulbs people are used to installing in their homes. In 2002, Alfredo Moser thought of inventing this plastic bottle light fixture that he could use during blackouts in his home in Uberaba.
This solar plastic bottle bulb can provide from 40 watts up to 60 watts of electricity. It is extremely beneficial notably to low income families because it does not cost anything and it does not cause electric shock. In short, it’s very eco-friendly, safe and healthy to use.
The inventor considers his creation divine light. In his own words, he said “God gave the sun to everyone and light is for everyone.” Alfredo Moser added that those who use his invention can be sure to save money moving onwards.
