A growing number of people prefer to live in compact homes today. For them, smaller homes mean less maintenance and easy living.
Some people, however, find it a challenge to make their small spaces look bigger and brighter. There are certain tricks to do this and all it takes is a little creativity.
Get multi-functional furniture
When looking for furniture to buy, choose those that has various functions. For instance, you can get a table that can also store your things or a sofa that can turn into a bed at night.
For storage purposes, ottomans, coffee tables and sofa tables are recommended. These furniture can be used to keep magazines, blankets, gadgets and even toys and can ensure a clutter-free home.
Use longer curtains
Not many homeowners know that hanging curtains at a level higher than the window can make a room appear bigger. You can even hang curtains from the ceiling and choose longer curtains including those that reach the floor.
By hanging your curtains higher, you draw attention to the height which results in the room looking bigger than usual.
Hang mirrors and wall art
Letting natural light into your home is a sure way of brightening up your space. One way to do this is to hang mirror on opposite walls so that light is reflected throughout the room. The end result is a bigger and brighter room.
Another way is to consider the art you hang on your walls such as a painting or letter perspectives. You can choose to hang the initials of your name or an image with a saying. Position three of these in a row above a large furniture and you can create an elegant space in a breeze.
Use plants
A brighter and greener home can be created as well using plants that can become the focal point of a room.
Choose plants that require little care and store much water. The ponytail palm and succulents are best for small spaces. Ferns are also ideal indoors as they like indirect lighting and can live long as long as their soil is kept moist all the time.
The amaryllis is another plant best for indoors. This is a trumpet-like flower and comes in red, white or pink.
Keep in mind that a small home can still be designed to look bigger and brighter. Whatever type of interior design theme you want, you can always achieve it with a little effort and imagination.
